What is a cataract?

cataract is a cloudy or opaque area in the normally clear lens of the eye.  The lens is located inside the eye behind the iris, the colored part of the eye.

What to expect?

Between 60% and 70% of the population will be diagnosed with cataracts by the age of 80.  Symptoms include:

·        Blurred or hazy vision

·        Reduced contrast and intensity of colors

·        Increased sensitivity to glare from lights, particularly when driving at night

·        Increased difficulty seeing at night

·        Change in the eye's refractive error

Is there a treatment for cataracts?

A cataract is treated with surgery. Surgery is necessary when the cataract significantly decreases vision, or the patient has a significant decrease in activities of daily living due to the changes in vision. Cataracts can be monitored for years before it is necessary for them to be removed.
